Summary

The death of Abraham Lincoln sets the stage for one of the greatest political showdowns in American history. On one side stands President Andrew Johnson, a notorious drunk and bigot who was sympathetic to the South. On the other side, Edwin M Stanton and the Radical Republicans in Congress, who want to secure Abraham Lincoln’s legacy and protect the 4 million Freed Slaves in the South. The Reconstruction era brings with it a series of firsts: the end of the Civil War, the first president assassinated, and the first impeachment of a president in US History. In the midst of the turmoil, a beloved war hero rises to the occasiona and seeks to fill the void left by President Lincoln’s murder: General Ulysses S Grant.

0:18.8	It's the middle of the night.
0:20.7	The woods are eerily quiet.
0:23.0	Inside the main house, the Garrett family is sound asleep.
0:26.3	All but Richard, head of the family.
0:28.8	The old man hasn't slept a wink.
0:30.9	That's because there are two men, two strangers, sleeping in the tobacco barn outside.
0:35.7	The men claim to be wounded Confederate soldiers on their way home from the war.
0:40.1	One of the men is on crutches, which supports their story.
0:43.0	There's something about these men that makes Garrett suspicious.
0:47.1	His churning thoughts are interrupted by a loud knock on the front door.
0:51.3	Garrett turns to his wife who wakes with a start, fetch my clothes.
0:56.1	Not only in a night-count, Garrett makes his way downstairs and peers through a window.
1:00.4	Outside, a swarm of union troops and detectives.
1:05.2	Garrett opens the door in an army officer named Everton Conger, waste no time.
1:09.6	Are you Mr. Garrett?
1:10.6	Yes, sir, Richard Garrett.
1:12.2	Who is in the house with you?
1:13.6	My family, my wife and children?
1:15.9	Where are the two men who stopped here at your house?
1:18.9	Garrett grows nervous.
