Summary

In 2004, journalist Evan Wright released a book called Generation Kill, all about his time attached to a Marine regiment during the 2003 invasion of Iraq. It was a hit, and the basis for a 2008 HBO series by the same name. As its name suggests, the US Marines 1st Recon Battalion is meant to... well... perform reconnaissance. But 'Chaos' and 'Godfather' saw them more suited for a blitzkrieg to Baghdad. The result is an extraordinary story of courage, insanity, and ruthlessness, and we're eager to talk about all seven episodes and all eight hours. Of course, while we go over our favorite characters, moments, and more, this conversation also delves into the Iraq War itself, what it was like living in a society that overwhelmingly supported the conflict, and the lessons we've hopefully learned for the future. So hit play and listen... but police that mustache first. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

That's true. Yeah, Chaos was my favorite. Chaos was good. Yeah, that's a great one.

Everything. I had random thoughts today. I don't even know how this popped in my head

1:00.0

because I haven't thought about this kid from my past in decades, right? So I was just

1:05.8

like, oh, you know what it was? I called Keke something and I was like, oh, I knew a kid name that.

1:09.7

So I grew up with a kid named Mush, right? He was about a year or two older than me in school.

1:16.3

He lived down the block. And he was just like an acquaintance. I just didn't really close

1:20.2

with him or anything, but everybody called him Mush. And then I called Keke that this morning.

1:24.2

I was like, get over here Mush. I had the wiper face after she ate. And then I was just thinking

1:28.0

about this kid Mush. He was an Italian kid, a little bit older, but he looked like a Mush.

1:33.2

Like it just worked. And then I thought of like every neighborhood or every school has either a

1:39.8

Mush and or a Smitty, right? And Smitty, you know where that derives from. That's just Smith,

1:45.7

right? And then I knew some Smiths that weren't Smitty. So there's a little mystery in that too.
