Summary

Whether it’s on the first two BOSTON albums or on releases by his latest group, BARRY GOUDREAU’S ENGINE ROOM, guitarist BARRY GOUDREAU brings the world a soaring, blues-inflected sound that has been part of our collective musical psyche ever since he threw down the monster lead on Boston’s 1977 rock radio smash, “Foreplay / Long Time.” I was thrilled to have Barry not only visit us backstage at a recent JEFFERSON STARSHIP gig I played in Beverly, Massachusetts — where Barry plugged in his beloved ’60s Gibson SG Junior and did this interview (during which, as you’ll hear, he discusses everything from working with Boston’s brilliant mastermind/chief composer and multi-instrumentalist/producer TOM SCHOLZ to collaborating with the late, great Boston singer BRAD DELP to creating music with his other bands, including RTZ, ORION THE HUNTER, and, of course, the Engine Room) — but also have Barry sit in with us on stage! That's right: During our encore later that night, Barry joins us for an extended jam where he starts off with a big solo, and then we trade licks back and forth, and you’ll hear it all go down at the end of the episode. Thanks to GUITAR PLAYER and guitarplayer.com for bringing this episode to you. “Guitar Player — Play better, sound better!” — JUDE GOLD, host/creator, NO GUITAR IS SAFE

Yeah, the first time I met Barry Gudra, one of my heroes was recently on the rock and romance cruise. And to answer a question

0:22.5

from one of my friends, yeah, we met over the rock part, not the romance part. Uh-huh. Seriously, though,

0:29.3

I actually didn't meet him on that boat, but I feel like I did because I watched both of his

0:33.1

concerts. They were so smoking. That's a pun. We'll get to that song later. And I gotta thank

0:39.8

guitar player.com for making this happen. We are gonna sit down with, as I said, one of my heroes,

0:47.3

starting with this great moment that he played.

Music You all know this solo.

1:02.5

It's from one of the biggest rock radio records of all time, Boston's debut album.

1:09.3

So many hits on that record. I mean, it still sounds fresh today.

1:15.0

Now, Barry, of course, has many other cool projects. He's done over the years. His latest, like on the boat.

1:20.8

And what he's doing these days is Barry Goddreau's engine room. And he also had R.T.Z and Orion the Hunter over the years, and he will always

1:43.1

be famous for contributing lead guitar on the

1:45.9

first two Boston records.

1:52.6

Working alongside the brilliant Tom Scholes, the producer, composer, engineer behind Boston.

2:00.4

Barry was, of course, also on the demos and such,

2:03.6

and he toured the world with Boston for like three years after the debut came out, played about

2:09.3

400 shows or so. So he's had quite a wild ride, and he does often get asked a lot about Boston,

2:16.3

and today's not going to be an exception, folks,

2:18.4

because that album is so close to my heart,

2:21.1

as it is to so many of us.

2:23.1

It has a certain perfect quality,
