I'm The thing about San Diego, a lot of it I learned was probably through the Tudor family.

The influence that Joel had on me started from his father Joe, and it trickled down to Joel.

And, you know, I have to say that Joe was someone who taught not only myself, but my brother

and a lot of other friends. Joe had grown up. He was a local, born and raised in San Diego.

And Joe taught us about San Diego Surf Culture, which actually

has a lot in common with several other communities

in California. Black

wetsuits, white surfboards,

style,

respect.

All of these things were super important.

And sort of at the top of that

hierarchy of surf cool if you

will was skip fry it was like everywhere you go if skip fry was out like people just stopped you

if you wanted to talk about style or think about your own style you would look at skip fry and that

was sort of the

foundation.

Probably from that time on, I got to learn a lot from Joel, because Joel was blessed in the

sense that Donald Takuyama was a shaper, and Donald was friends with everybody.

I mean, Nat Young, Skip Fry, Mickey Dora. You name any legend from the 60s,

and Donald knew them, and he introduced Joel to them. And Joel would come back home and

share all these stories about all these people he met, and I learned about surf history
