Summary

Religion and Sex – Can They Be Bedfellows? Today we discuss the Muslim culture, sex, and vaginismus with Dr. Sadaf Lodhi, OBGyn and sex coach for Muslim women. She is host of the Muslim Sex Podcast – we discuss her origin story Religion can have a profound effect on one’s sex life/sexuality. Islam is a sex positive religion. When the Muslim countries were colonized they tended to become more puritanical. Islam discusses sex within the context of marriage. Many times women experience shame and people don’t talk about women’s pleasure. Common things Dr. Lodhi sees women coming to her with: Seeing sex as a duty Low libido Beliefs like sex is dirty or sex will be painful One of her most important things she likes to do is empower women through education. Women get pressure from their partner and an expectation that it is a duty. And they are failing them and God. Vaginismus – the involuntary contraction of the muscles surrounding the lower 1/3rd of the vagina. 1/3rd of Muslim culture may struggle with vaginismus. The role of mindfulness in helping vaginismus and low desire. “People make putting something in the vagina a big freaking deal” – Dr. C. The role of PT in treating vaginismus. There are no FDA approved medications for vaginismus. Dr. Lodhi shares a huge win with us. It is not about the number of times of sex a week. The role of the scholars and the males in helping women feel sex positive. Obie, and tell me, I just want to know the origin story of the Muslim Sex podcast and how you

0:34.5

realized that you needed to be to create this in the world. I just want to talk

0:38.5

so much more about religion and sex because I think it's under discussed. So that's why I'm really

0:43.5

happy to have you on here. Thanks. Thanks. Yeah. So, you know, it started with actually just a

0:49.0

conversation between a friend of mine and she and I are both Muslim. And we started talking about how, you know, within our community,

0:58.1

and I think, you know, within a lot of communities

1:01.0

and specifically conservative communities,

1:03.6

sex is a big no-no.

1:05.4

It's a big taboo.

1:06.3

And so not many people discuss it and definitely are not very comfortable

1:10.6

even talking about it.

1:12.4

And so we thought, you know, wouldn't it be great if we had something, a podcast where we

1:18.4

could talk about sex and then we thought of names and we thought, yeah, you know, let's go with that.

1:23.8

And so actually I was a little bit nervous about calling it the Muslim Sex podcast just because, I mean, I thought it was, actually, I thought it was great and I was a little

1:30.9

nervous at the same time because you don't hear really Muslim sex put together too often. So,

1:36.9

so yeah, but that was really it. It's just that we didn't have, you know, there was really no

1:41.2

outlet and there's really no forum to discuss something like that, something as important as that as we know that, you know, there was really no outlet and there's really no forum to discuss something like that,
