Summary

Gisèle Pelicot, a woman who should have been enjoying her retirement and provincial life had it all come crashing down when she was brought into a police station in November 2020, where she was faced with the fact that she was abused by strangers for a decade, all of which was facilitated by her husband of half a century, Dominique Pelicot. She would be the centre of France's biggest rape trial, a symbol of femninsm and survivors across the globe.

Hello, delicious friends, and welcome to a special bonus episode of

0:15.4

Who Dead What Now, the history podcast that is not your history class?

0:21.2

For International Women's Day, 2026, with me, your host, Katie Charlwood, History Harlet

0:29.1

and reader of books.

0:31.7

So this episode is going to be a little different from what I normally do.

0:36.7

So typically, I like to keep things at least

0:39.7

25 years in the past because that's a full grown adult. Like that's, that's something. However,

0:46.9

as a millennial, I keep living through many major historical events in which landscapes,

0:53.4

nations and societies keep changing. And like, I very nearly called

0:59.4

this episode like, who's doing what now? Just because I am picking something that's happened

1:04.4

within the last five to ten years, something that I think is very important in a person who I don't

1:09.8

feel we have to wait till she dies in order for us to talk about her.

1:14.1

If you are listening to this on Day of Release, it is International Women's Day,

1:17.9

and this is during Women's History Month.

1:20.9

Now, I am going to talk about some more light and fluffy things near the end of the month,

1:26.2

because we're going to need that. But right now I want

1:29.4

to talk about someone who could have very easily just crumpled, hidden and allowed the world to

1:39.8

overlook what happened to her. And it really shines a light on how society is right now,

1:47.6

how easy this is. And the challenges we face together. Now this is going to be difficult for some

1:54.8

of you to hear. I am going to be talking about abuse, sexual assault, rape, just so many horrible, vile things, murder. It's going to be

2:07.2

awful. It's going to be unpleasant and it's not going to be easy for any of us. If you are in any

2:14.2

way sensitive, feel free to skip away, exit stage left, and I will see you next time.
