Summary
What do people do when a dragon destroys their town and 1/4 of their population? Tolkien has a very realistic sense of this.

| 0:00.0 | Welcome to the Lord of the Rings lore cast, the show that explores the background of |
| 0:11.2 | Tolkien's amazing world from the very beginning. |
| 0:14.8 | I've talked about this number of times on this show, about how Tolkien is such a master |
| 0:29.2 | of building a scene and building a scene and leading to a climactic event. |
| 0:35.6 | And then the way things follow after, the quiet moments, |
| 0:41.3 | and then beginning to build things again, and foreshadowing things that are about to happen. |
| 0:46.8 | And we're going to see a lot of that at the end of this chapter. |
| 0:50.7 | Smalg is dead. He's done. |
| 0:53.3 | And the people of Lake Town, of Escaroth, need to put things back together. |
| 0:59.0 | And we get a lot of these little details in this section about the way things would feel |
| 1:04.5 | and the way that, well, even politics might play out in a situation like this. |
| 1:11.4 | Again, it feels like the kind of thing that Tolkien himself may have been witness to during his life. |
| 1:19.1 | And even more than this, we get kind of a really unique situation here with Bard. |

| 1:29.4 | heroes go through a hero's journey type scenario, which I've detailed before, and in even |
| 1:34.6 | greater detail in some of the bonus episodes. And it would make sense that a character like |
| 1:39.2 | Bilbo would go through a hero's journey, a character like Frodo or Aragorn, or maybe even Gandalf, |
| 1:44.9 | which absolutely does happen. But what about Bard? He was just introduced very recently, |
| 1:52.1 | and yet he is definitively a hero. He is the hero of Escaroth. He is the descendant of Gerean of Dale. |
| 2:03.3 | He is the archer who stood and took down Smog. |
| 2:07.1 | And before that was on guard and warning people to be careful and to be aware because |
| 2:14.5 | the dragon could come at any moment. |
