When I was growing up, it was not unusual on a Sunday morning to see women wearing a hat in church.

Maybe it was just a fashion statement, or maybe it was something of Christian piety, private Christian piety.

But I noticed that, although very few women cover their heads in church nowadays, at our issues, et cetera, making the case conference for the divine service when we closed everything off, there were several women who had head veils during the divine service.

So what do we make of St. Paul's admonition to the Corinthians about a woman covering her head in prayer?

Does it apply one for one to us today?

Dr. Gregory Lockwood, he's a lecturer in New Testament studies at Australian Lutheran College, and all through the Concordia commentary on 1 Corinthians.

Oh, good to be back, Todd.

Here is the text that concerns us today, 1 Corinthians 11, beginning at verse 2 through 16.

Now I commend you because you remember me in everything and maintain the traditions even as I delivered them to you, but I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, the head of a wife is her husband and the head of Christ is God.

Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered, dishonors his head, but every wife who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered, dishonors her head since it is the same as if her head were shaven.

If a wife will not cover her head, then she should cut her hair short.

But since it is disgraceful for a wife to cut her hair or shave her head, let her cover her head.

For a man ought not to cover his head since he is in the image of the glory of God, but the woman is the glory of the man.

For man was not made from woman, but woman for man.

Neither was man created for woman, but woman for man.

Because why a wife ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels, nevertheless, in the Lord, woman is not independent of man nor man of woman, for woman was made from man, so man is now born of woman.
