| 0:00.0 | Hi, this is Greg. Look for my book The Agile Brand on Amazon or on my website at the |
| 0:05.4 | agile. World. Welcome to the Agile World podcast. This is Greg Kilstrom. |
| 0:12.2 | In the next couple of episodes I'm going to talk a little bit more about Agile and |
| 0:16.7 | Agile methodology. |
| 0:18.9 | The purpose of this podcast really isn't to go into depth about Agile methodology. I approach it really more from a |
| 0:25.0 | from a branding marketing perspective than its original roots in |
| 0:29.7 | manufacturing and technology, but I thought it would be useful to go through at least some background for those a little bit less familiar. |
| 0:37.0 | In order to talk about Agile, we really need to talk about what preceded it, which is what's referred to in a few different ways. |
| 0:44.9 | One is waterfall, which is also related to something called software development life cycle or |
| 0:50.9 | SDLC. But essentially it's this idea that there's a process to make something. It really could be anything. It could be making a rocket, it could be writing software, pretty much anything you can imagine. |
| 1:05.7 | But this process involves a series of steps, and those steps need to be done in a certain order. |
| 1:12.4 | And if you need to make a change when you're a few steps |
| 1:15.9 | into the process it can be incredibly disruptive. So there's some good things about this process and some not so good ones. |
| 1:25.0 | But the reason it originated and I'll talk about it in terms of software in particular, |
| 1:30.0 | I'm a little more familiar with that than manufacturing but back in the day when computers |
| 1:36.2 | were the size of rooms if not buildings software needed to be written in a very particular way. |
| 1:44.0 | You only had a few minutes of time to really, you know, or you had to block off minutes, I guess, a better way of saying, |
| 1:52.0 | to use a computer in the first place. So you had this time |
| 1:55.6 | period where you could use it. This huge hulking computer taking up some room somewhere |
| 2:01.6 | was operated by punch cards. So punch cards are not very |
| 2:05.0 | forgiving. So if you make a mistake you have to go basically wait back in line, get |
| 2:11.1 | in queue and wait in line to use this computer again for a period of time. |
