Summary

Teaching kids about sexual consent starts early with things like teaching respect, boundaries, emotion skills, empathy skills and a healthy attitude towards sex and sexuality. Although this is a deep and intricate topic, this episode covers the basics of setting up a great foundation for and teaching about respectful sexual boundaries and consent in age appropriate ways. Hello, everyone, and welcome to the Your Village podcast, parenting beyond discipline,

0:11.9

the place to learn about all things parenting and get your questions answered. I'm your host,

0:18.0

Aaron Royer Azraland. I know I originally had a different topic on the schedule

0:22.5

for this episode, but that will be pushed to next week. Because of an incident that has been

0:28.4

big in the news and all over social media, and that is the story about Brock Turner, I felt

0:34.3

it was very important that I share some tips about teaching our kids about consent.

0:39.2

This is one of those topics that I was referring to when I shared back in the intro episode

0:43.5

that we would cover it all. Now as a warning, while the words I use will be clean, no profanity,

no vulgarity, I will be touching on ways to talk with kids about sex and sexuality.

0:57.7

I will be using proper anatomical terms for body parts and discussing how to teach your kids about

1:03.1

sexual consent and boundaries. So if this is something that you prefer to share with your kids in your

1:08.8

own words, feelings, values, and time, and your kids

1:13.2

are around now, then you may want to listen to this another time when they're not around.

1:18.7

If you're not aware of the details of the case, I mentioned earlier, you can search Brock Turner

1:23.4

on Google, as I don't want to share anything alarming for those who might still be listening

1:28.1

with their kids in the immediate area. I will say there were two witnesses who saw the crime

1:33.8

stopped the perpetrator and held him until police arrived. He was convicted on three counts.

1:41.3

The only personal thought I will share on this entire case is my grave disappointment

1:46.4

in the complete lack of empathy and understanding about the gravity of his crime and its effect

1:52.8

on the victim by both the perpetrator, but even more, especially by his father. We parents

1:59.6

pass on our attitudes about sex, gender roles, gender

2:04.0

value, and how we treat other people overall. But in addition to leading by example,
