As I'm speaking, the heads of NATO governments are meeting in Washington to mark the 75th anniversary of the organisation's founding. The celebrations will be somewhat muted.

NATO is today faced with some of the most severe challenges of its lifetime

On the one hand, there's, of course, the ongoing proxy conflict.

I think you can call it that with Putin's Russia,

the starkness of which was emphasised
