Hello and welcome to Battleground 44 with me Saul David and Patrick Bishop.

0:17.0

Today in the first of two parts we're discussing Paris 44, The Shame and the Glory, Patrick's

0:22.8

brilliant new book, and one in my view that he was born to write. And I had to remind myself,

0:27.6

actually, looking at the back of the book, Patrick, that you had been for a while Bureau chief

0:32.5

in Paris for the Daily Telegraph. And of course, you've, you've had a long and close association with

0:38.0

France and Paris in particular. So would you say this was a book you were born to write?

0:43.8

1:27.1

French film actresses. One thing

1:30.1

the French never got right, of course, is pop music. So no one was ever into French pop.

1:36.0

But the old great, the great old chancelier, like Jacques Brel, you know, I was a big Jacques

1:40.7

Brell fan early on. So yeah, all in all, it was, you know, what I liked about it was not so much French high

1:47.6

culture, sort of Frenchness.

1:49.1

There was just something about the French and France that got me from the beginning.

1:56.9

I didn't actually go there until I was about 16 to 17 hitchhike to Paris with a mate of mine.

2:02.3

It now seems incredible that at that age you'll be allowed by your parents to go off and do this.

2:07.6

We camped in the, in the, there was a campsite in the Bwanda Beloit, which is actually still there.
