Summary

An integral part of Paquito D’Rivera’s band for many years, Oscar Stagnaro has been a Professor at the Berklee College of Music in Boston since 1988. He’s been largely responsible for the school’s development of Latin education, and in today’s episode he tells Scott about his move to the US and his Surf Rock roots.

All right. This is funny, what I'm going to say. I start playing bass in an acoustic guitar.

Because back in Peru with my brother Ramon, that is a guitar player, we used to play surf music.

long time ago. Yeah, so my brother used to play a first guitar and there was a

non-accompanied guitar and then I was designed to or you know punish to play the bass.

On an acoustic guitar but with the four strings. Yeah, well with the 16 beat but we didn't have, you know, we didn't have money at that time to buy instruments.

And in Paris, in Peru was very expensive to buy an instrument, so we have all acoustic guitars all the time.

So then we started playing wipeout and walk, don't run, and, you know, Apache.

So slowly we move on to more like American rock, like Santana.
