I'm Angus Wallace. In this episode, I'm joined by Barrett Tillman.

We're going to be looking at the closing weeks of the war in 1945.

August would see the Russians enter the war against Japan.

The atomic bombs were dropped.

And there was an attempted coup in Japan.

The culmination of all this was the final declaration of surrender by Japan's

Emperor Hirohito on the 15th of August,

full of a couple of weeks later by the formal ceremony on the USS Missouri,

presided over by General MacArthur.
