On today's episode of Ghost Town, we're coming back to America and continuing west to the La Fonda on the Plaza Hotel in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

The location of where the La Fonda stands now has been the site of INS since 1609, two years after Santa Fe itself was founded.

This is pretty insane by American standards, especially insane by American West standards.

The hotel sits on two very powerful historic routes, 280 years apart.

The first one is the El Camino Real de Tierra and Dentro.

In English, the Royal Road of the Interior Land, which was a 1500 mile trade route between Mexico City and New Mexico from 1598 to the late 1800s.

In 1821, Captain William Becknell and his party found their way to the IN during a trip across the plains from Missouri, establishing the very end of an 800 mile long

old Santa Fe Trail, linking Independence, Missouri to Santa Fe.

The Santa Fe Trail was an essential commercial route up until 1880 with the rise of the railroad.

This hotel was a popular lodging option, probably one of the only ones among trappers, soldiers, miners, and politicians.
