Summary

Today we chat with Portland Thorn's defender, Kelli Hubly. Kelli tells us about the exciting Championship win last weekend and what makes this Portland squad special as well what makes the backline work so well. We also found Kelli's college experience extremely inspirational, from being suspended on her collegiate soccer team to finding out she has an autoimmune disease that she had to step away from the game while learning how to heal and get better. Unlike most of our guests, Kelli didn't think about playing professional until her final season in college when she relearned her love for the game and decided she wanted to continue playing the game. She worked her way up from a practice player to a force to be reckoned with in the backline of the current champion team of the NWSL.

1:25.6

And it was just like really cool. Like I've never played an outie field before, but it's like very like on top of you.

1:32.1

So it was just like a really cool experience. Like the amount of people there that even though it wasn't a home game for either team, like you still felt like a ton of fans, they're like supporting you, which is cool.

1:44.0

Yeah, like everyone's like, so when in the game, did you feel like you guys won?

1:49.5

And like not just how cocky but going into the game, like the vibes were so good and we were playing such a talker that I was like, there's no way we lose this game.

1:57.1

But I think scoring early, like I think when we score early, like it gives us like a lot of confidence.

2:02.5

And you could just tell everyone was like on their game and like just wanting to do their best.

2:07.7

So like the whole game, I just felt like we were in control and like we were going to win. And that has not always been the case, like the Gotham game that we tied.

2:16.8

I was like, we were up through one and I never felt like we were in control of the game. And then they tied.

2:22.5

So this game, like you just could feel us in control, like we were working as a team, like doing everything we've talked about.

2:28.0

So the whole game was pretty competent. It still got like very hectic at times. I think the whole first half, like my heart was like insane.

2:37.0

Because it was just hectic at all times. Like everyone's had chaotic energy. And so it was like hard to calm down.

2:43.0

But I think second half calmed down a little bit more.

2:46.6
