Summary

After Liz decides to stay at BYU, she meets her future husband, Sam. Liz takes us through her courtship with Sam, their reasons for marrying each other, and the various complications they faced early on in their marriage. Like many LDS women trying to properly fulfill their purpose, Liz finds motherhood alone cannot make her feel happy & fulfilled with the exclusion of the things that make Liz who she is and bring her joy.

Hello everyone and welcome to another episode of Mormon Stories podcast. I'm your host John DeLin. Today we are now in part three of

For those who didn't watch parts one and two, we've had an amazing series so far with Liz.

As we were talking to Liz about the themes, I just want to kind of give a quick recap. Liz was born. If I remember

0:32.0

me right and Liz will correct me, she was born to an African-American father from Louisiana and a South Korean mother,

0:42.8

kind of a biracial interracial marriage, raised vaguely Catholic but not super religious.

0:49.9

And in part one, Liz advanced kind of three themes for part one, which were abandonment, adolescence and atonement.

1:25.1

And how in her adolescent years, she found her way, but the Mormon Church was a very important part of her adolescence

1:32.4

even though her father would not allow her to get baptized. And there were also some themes around dating

1:39.2

and sexuality or modesty culture, love, chastity, kind of stuff. Anyway, it's a really important part one.

1:46.2

If you haven't watched parts one and two yet, please pause, go back and watch them. And that will provide the

1:51.4

groundwork for parts three and four, which we're covering today.

1:55.3

Soz Part One and then part two, Liz actually ends up going to Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.

2:01.9

As a non-Wormon, she's there on a music scholarship where she played the bass, the stand-up bass,

2:08.6

four BYU's most elite orchestra toward the world with BYU and started trying to date and got baptized at BYU.

2:22.5

So the themes that she advanced for part two were BYU baptism and boyfriends. And again, really important episode,

2:30.4

please go watch that. And it culminates in Liz sort of realizing that she actually enjoyed Mormonism more

2:39.7

when she was not an official member because once she started experiencing the worthiness interviews
