Isaiah chapter 61, verses 1 through 3.

The spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor.

He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the

captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound, to proclaim the year of the Lord's

favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, to grant to those who mourn in Zion,

to give them a beautiful headdress instead of

ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit,

that they may be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord that he may be glorified.

When you get to the New Testament and you see Luke's introduction to Jesus, we see his

birth in chapter 2, but then in chapter 4, Jesus walks into the temple.

He pulls out the Old Testament scroll of Isaiah. He reads these words about the Spirit of God

being upon me, the Lord anointing me to bring good news to the poor, bind up the broken

hearted. And Jesus reads this passage, he sits down and he says, today this scripture is

fulfilled in your hearing.

In other words, I am him.

The Spirit of God's on me, Jesus says.

The Lord has anointed me, and I've come to bring goodness of the poor,

reclaim liberty to the captives, the opening of the prison of those who are bound.

The whole picture is.

And this is where we see, this all over Isaiah, all over the Old Testament.
