And I was like, oh, that can't be good at all, you know.

In the fall of 1993, what was to be a routine mission for the US Army Rangers and first Special Forces operational detachment delta soldiers was derailed by the downing of two black Hawk helicopters over the city of Mogadishu.

The ensuing battle has become the stuff of legend both for the horrors it includes and the dedication and bravery it evidences.

For Delta member Thomas Saturday, it also was one of the first battles in a career that would span from Mogadishu through to crit and beyond into the broader war on terror.

But in the late hours of October 3rd, 1993, Saturday was pretty sure his army career was about to be cut short.

But it was it was that all night. It was relentless attacks running out of ammo. At one point I had my knife out. I was down to like, I don't know, 10, 15 rounds.

And I had a knife out and I'm like, well, I had resigned myself to the fact that I was probably going to die.
