You've seen a musical, Joseph in his amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and now it's time to read the story from the Bible.

You could find this story in Genesis 37, or at least it starts in Genesis 37.

Last week we talked about Abraham, and in between Abraham and Joseph, there are two generations, Isaac, and Jacob, who then is later becomes Israel, and one of his 12 sons that become the 12 tribes of Israel, is his son Joseph.

And just to set the stage here, Jacob, as you may recall, had a little trouble with his marriage.

The biggest trouble he had with his marriage is he married the wrong woman.

He worked for his father-in-law for seven years

to be able to marry Rachel, and at the altar his father-in-law switched in Leah, and he needed

to work for another seven years to marry Rachel, also, not instead. And so Jacob had two wives, and then he has 12 children by these two wives,

and each of the two wives, maid servants. So 12 kids, four wives. And that sets some of the

stage for what goes on here in Genesis 37, and some of the problem that goes on, because

Joseph is the son of that favorite wife, Rachel.

And with that in mind, let's read Genesis 37.

Jacob lived in the land where his father had stayed in the land of Canaan.

This is the count of Jacob.

Joseph, a young man of 17, was tending the flocks with his brothers, the sons of

Beha and the sons of Zilpa, his father's wives, and he brought their father a bad report about them.
