At the time, I was a student and a member of the student council of my department.

October was the start of the semester, and at German universities, this is also when

freshman weeks took place. These weeks consisted of various events organized by upperclassmen

to welcome the new freshmen. During this particular year, I was the main organizer for freshman weeks.

It was a Monday. I woke up at five in the morning so that I could be there earlier than

everyone else to prepare breakfast for the freshman. At that time, I lived in a residential

building that was not an official student dorm, but it was mostly inhabited

by students. However, there were also many non-student residents living there, some of them rather

sketchy because the rent was very cheap. Each floor was divided into apartments on the left side

and apartments on the right side.

To get to either side of the floor, you had to open an additional door.

The door to my side of the floor always squeaked very loudly.

As I was getting ready, I stepped out of the small bathroom of my single room apartment and

stood in front of my mirror to put makeup on.

To my left, less than a meter away, was the door to my apartment. To my right was the rest of the room.

I heard the loud squeaking of the door that led from the stairwell and into the hallway.
