I've lived here. I haven't lived here my whole life. But so we're looking forward to bringing you

guys another crazy story from our home state.

So this week's episode of Sweet Home Alabama takes us back up to the northeast corner of Alabama.

Athens seems like a lot goes on in this small little town.

It was the night of Halloween in 2005.

Charles Newman was burglarized and then killed in his own home.

Now, Mr. Newman was a widower and had survived World War II as a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division.

You know, a fun fact, though, about Mr. Newman, that he was in D-Day invasion at Normandy in France in

1944. And at the time of his murder, he was 80 years old. So we have a war veteran who was

murdered in his home, which it hurts my heart because these veterans should be, to me, placed on a pedestal, not just because both my parents are veterans, but I have a special place.

And especially D-Day, that was such a deadly but impactful event. So when Mr. Newman returned home from the war, he worked as a building contractor, and he had since

retired, as we mentioned, he was 80 at this time. And maybe it was because of all of his military

experiences, but he was a very, very cautious man. He never opened the front door without looking

out the window. He wanted to know who it was

before he opened it. And he didn't even give out candy at Halloween because he never knew who

was going to come up. He wanted to know the person before he opened the door. Mr. Newman's grandson,
