Summary

How is it that we can feel unhappy when we see someone else happy? And what does that reveal about the condition of our mind and heart? In this episode, Raghunath and Kaustubha explore envy through Shakespeare's words, Patrick Henry's warning, and Aghāsura's jealousy in Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 10.12.

They discuss why resentment is a form of spiritual self-sabotage, how bhakti transforms envy into empathy, and why the cowherd boys' simple joy surpasses even the achievements of the greatest yogis.

Highlights include:
• Shakespeare on envy: "O, how bitter…"
• Patrick Henry's verdict: jealousy = the only vice with no pleasure
• Aghāsura as cruelty and violence fueled by envy
• Why fame is fickle, and why validation addiction cripples meditation
• Snapshots of Vrindavan's joy: bugles, lunch bags, peacock feathers, and even sacred "sadness"

A lively mix of scripture, reflection, and humor—designed to help us see envy for what it is and train the heart toward genuine joy in others' happiness.

Srimad Bhagavatam 10.12.1-24

Why can't I just want the best for everyone, even before me, right?

0:06.0

It's like that's the way, this, the mood of a Vaishnava, the mood of a real Bhaktiyogi is something like, they just want everyone to be happy, even if they have to suffer for it.

0:18.5

And that's like the brightest spot in the universe, right? The darkest spot

0:22.7

is like they're happy and I'm upset about it. Sure. And that, there's something there that's

preventing us from tasting Bhakti, from tasting, from beginning to understand and taste what it is to have the heart of a Vaishnava, which is pure, you know, it's sweet. That's what we're working for. We just have to let go of all this stuff. You know, we got to root it out. We've got to find it. And kind of like, like you were saying, train yourself. Yeah, kind of like say, hey, mind, I don't entertain those kind of thoughts.

0:55.9

You know, as a matter of fact, I'm going to reprogram your programming and think of it a different way.

1:02.5

I don't allow my mind to go there.

1:04.2

That's crazy.

1:05.5

Why should I be prone to your ridiculous programming?

1:09.0

It's so evident in the Mahabar.

1:13.1

Durriodin is so envious of, of, uh, uh, uh, Udisterer.

1:16.5

Yeah, like every time Udisterer gets praised, it's like, yeah, it gets like under his skin.

1:21.6

Right.

1:22.4

And, and, and of course, Chaitanya's simple, but very, very bold and sobering statements that even devotees who've been in this game for a long time have to come to terms with.

1:35.5

It's not about seeking validation. It's about validating others. It's appreciating other people and not being like a hound dog for desperate for validation.

1:47.2

Why?

1:47.8

Why aren't they noticing me?

1:48.9

Why aren't they appreciating me?

1:51.6

And instead, stepping outside of my maha ego and just seeing the good in other people.

1:59.3

Oh, now, Bhagavati, Vasudevaeah. the good in other people. Raghavati, Vasudeva, Bahia.
