That song is like an African-American urban murder ballad from the turn of the century. Staggerly is like a kind of a gangster John Henry. It apparently all stems from an actual incident of a gambling-inspired shooting in St. Louis, I believe, in the early 20th century

in the black, in the black, segregated black section of St. Louis. And then the guy who
