On October 31st of 1979, 16-year-old Shirley Lynnette Ledford was making her way home from

a Halloween party in the Sunland to Hunga neighborhood of the San Fernando Valley.

Having been unable to get a ride home from the party, Shirley found herself having to

hitchhike when was standing outside a gas station when she suddenly recognized someone

who drove up to the pumps.

His name was Lawrence, and Shirley knew him through his frequent visits to a restaurant

where she worked as a part-time waitress.

As Lawrence got out of his van to pump gas, Shirley approached them, asking if he might
