Summary

“Deep Sniff” author Adam Zmith joins me to talk poppers, raids on the Royal Vauxhall Tavern, poppers trainer videos, late-stage sexuality acceptance and the corresponding impact on quality of life, poppers blindness, 70’s clone culture, gay bars, amyl, butyl, and more. After my talk with Adam, enjoy an excerpt of my Patreon only chat with Stephen Trask. Taken from the multi-episode deluxe edition of my “Hedwig & The Angry Inch” Movie Club, we get into the fraught period before the creation of “Midnight Radio”, theater crime, and more.

Well, let me formally welcome you to Craig and Friends, author of Deep Sniff, Adam Smith. It's nice that it rhymes too. Yeah, it is and some people get confused. They mix them up.

0:45.0

So Adam Smith and Deep Smith. Although I mean, one if wanted to give you a nickname, Adam Smith wouldn't be too far off the mark given your proclivities.

1:00.0

Yes, I'm a sniffing and a proud sniffer, which is a nice thing to see. And you address that in the book. And of course the book deep sniff is about poppers, the history of poppers and all of the attendant lifestyle practices.

1:14.0

One participates in while enjoying them. You're talking about fucking well, yes, but you do mention the dance floor.

1:22.0

And the dance floor. Let's get into your first experience with poppers. I mean, you obviously get into it in the book, but I think it's a good place to start.

1:29.0

Well, actually, my first the first time I remember I'm capturing poppers was in a threesome. And it was I turned up to a hookup with someone I'd hooked up with before.

1:43.0

And then he invited someone else over and they was niffing poppers and I hadn't done I hadn't sniffed poppers before I didn't know what it was.

1:51.0

And so I didn't actually sniff. I was already pretty well stimulated by the threesome happening.

1:58.0

Sure, which was unplanned. And that was nice. And then I, and then I just, you know, like looked into it and like learned about it probably by myself online.

2:10.0

And bought someone and tried some by myself. And but I don't I don't so I don't remember the exact what happened the first time I did it would it would have been by myself, but then I do remember the first time, which wouldn't have been too much too too much later actually when I when I really

2:28.0

like felt the power of poppers and the potency of poppers and it was a new year's eve and I was by myself at home looking upon and whanking and I sniffed poppers and I found pop a bit of videos.

2:42.0

And I just heard a great time and I was like, wow, this is really, really good and from then on it's been a part of my life.

2:48.0

And we're talking very frankly and openly about some things in here that you in the book mentioned that even the notion of being gay or being considered gay or saying you gay, etc.

2:58.0

was quite a bit of a hurdle while around what era would that be?

3:02.0

Well, actually, I mean, I'm 36 now and until I was 29, I didn't have sex with anyone and didn't really come out to myself and come out certainly not come out to anyone else.

3:15.0

And to tell them or even not even to come out, but just to tell them like what porn I was looking at or what I fancy, you know, I was I was I was only really having sex with myself.

3:27.0

For a long time, and you know, and there are lots of reasons why that is which we can go into if you want and let's give a little sense of why.

3:39.0

Well, I guess when I was a teenager, I was looking at different kinds of porn and looking at different kind of, you know, magazine pictures and it was different genders and different bodies, but I definitely fancy the men more.

3:57.0

And so that was just that was the schedule really I was just spending more and more time looking at those pictures and thinking of that yeah less than that I'm looking at other kinds of bodies sure.

4:08.0

And I guess I I felt I always felt like when I was growing up that that I knew what gay was and it was not really very positive thing.

4:19.0

It wasn't really well represented it wasn't very broadly represented there were quite narrow views of what being gay is which was like, you know, hedonistic and slutty and now I am both of those things.
