You know, one of the eight key traits of game changers is excellence.

And remember what it means, the definition,

superior or eminent, but true excellence is being superior to your former self, not to other people.

And so this should be a daily focus for us, mastering ourselves getting better today than we were

yesterday. And there are so many areas to work on,

like attitude. Do I have a better attitude? Did I respond to crisis better or rudeness better

or rejection or disappointment or defeat better? Am I learning to manage my emotions better? How about

skills? What did I improve? What can I improve? Knowledge? What can I learn today? What can I learn? What can I learn more about or learn at a deeper level? Or execution? Oh, there's a great area. Now it's not just knowledge, but it's application of that knowledge, right? Was I more consistent today? How did I execute? It's one thing you know it. Did I actually do it? Was I more consistent today than yesterday? How about character choices? I mean, we could go on. Did I own it? Did I give credit away? How did I receive feedback? Did I keep my commitments? All of that are character choices. How about temperament? Oh, some people are moody. Their body language sucks. How about the tone of my voice?

How about responses to rudeness? All that has to do with temperament, the guy that cuts me off in traffic, the server who didn't refill my tea fast enough.

Whatever. Did I handle it better today than yesterday? We could go on and on, but as you can see, mastering yourself is a daily thing. It's not a destination

thing. You never arrive. But when you're truly committed, life is always challenging and

energizing. And complacency isn't an issue because there are so darn many ways to get better.

You're never going to master a job, a position, or the competition, until you first master yourself.

And that, by the way, is what you can control.
