In this episode, I want to talk to you about the objectives of the sermon.

So what is the difference between preaching and teaching?

That's a big question, and I don't think there is an easy answer.

On one hand, preaching and teaching overlap.

They are two actions or two functions that support one another or closely connected

to each other that truly rely on the other. There is a sense in which the terms are broadly synonymous.

Preaching and teaching go together.

And yet there is a sense on the other hand

where absolutely there's a distinction

between preaching and teaching.

And I think there's a, can be a debate about where you draw that line.

I think it's a blurry line, to be honest, but there's, there's a, there's some line between

preaching and teaching. I would concede that not all, that teaching doesn't necessarily include preaching.

And I would say that preaching doesn't necessarily include teaching, but it should.

And so really maybe the bigger question then is, what is a sermon?

What sets preaching apart from teaching?

What is a sermon and what makes it different than a talk or a Bible study lesson or a group discussion in fellowship around the word.

What makes a sermon a sermon? I would mention three things in that regard.

I would say a sermon is characterized by proclamation, purpose, and persuasion.
