Summary

Nintendo has long dominated gaming's lucrative handheld scene, vanquishing foes who dared enter the space, one after another, from Atari to SEGA to SNK. But then 2004 rolled around. It was late in that year (and into the next) that Sony launched PlayStation Portable, or PSP, the only non-Nintendo handheld in the history of the industry to... well... hold its own against its arch-rival in an ecosystem it had to scratch, claw, and bite its way into. Yet, PSP's legacy is a mixed one, remembered as much as a fabulous on-the-go emulator as it was a unique proving ground for some of Sony's biggest IP. Discontinued in 2014, our memories of PSP are growing dimmer by the year. So let's put some thoughts on the record, and let's do so with a special guest: MrMattyPlays, who holds PlayStation Portable near-and-dear to his heart. Learn more about your ad choices. My name is Colin Moriarty. Today I'm not joined by my brother, Dagon Moriarty. This is only

0:22.1

the second time I've ever done the show with someone else. And the first time I've ever done it,

0:26.7

with someone who's not my family, directs family, of course. Matt, he's my adopted son.

0:31.6

I was going to say it. But I'm here with Mr. Matt. He plays Matt. Thank you for joining me today.

0:35.6

Of course. Good to see you. Very exciting. We've been trying to get this going for a couple of

0:38.6

weeks now. So yeah, happy to be here. This topic, PlayStation Portable that we're doing today for

0:44.0

our retro and nostalgia podcast has been hanging over our heads for a while. And Dagon, my brother,

0:49.0

who's of course the beloved co-host of the show, really the star of the show. I don't think

0:53.2

anyone really listens to this show for me. So they'll probably be listening to it for you now.

0:58.4

But Dagon is 11 years older and he's into a bunch of different stuff. And he's a huge retro

1:05.1

gamer and stuff. But PSP is just a total blind spot for him. And we were trying to give him time to

1:10.1

catch up with it and all that. But we really just want to get this topic out the door. And since

1:14.4

Dagon is beginning his new job as the animation director at a studio in New York City,

1:20.4

we gave him the week off. And I invited Matt. And like Matt, he said, we have been trying to get

1:26.6

this going for a couple of weeks. But it's not been that long. And I really think you're going to be

1:29.6

the perfect guest for this Maddie because you love PSP. And I don't have to wait for Dagon

1:36.2

to buff up. You were there. You still love it. And I think it's going to be really good. So

1:40.4

thank you for joining me. Of course. Yeah. Now that I think about it, our first couple of videos

1:44.6

together when we were doing side quests were focused around PlayStation Portable consoles. The
