| 0:48.0 | Much has been made over a recent study which found that dieting, especially the kind of dieting that produces rapid weight loss, |
| 0:54.6 | messes with your body chemistry in ways that make it extremely difficult to maintain |
| 0:58.8 | that hard-won weight loss. First of all the study found that losing weight triggers changes in hormones that rev up your appetite, and obviously that's not helpful. |
| 1:09.0 | Secondly, the study confirmed that sustained calorie restriction lowers your metabolism |
| 1:14.8 | so that you burn fewer calories as you go about your daily activities. |
| 1:18.6 | This lowered metabolism can continue for a year or even longer after the dieting stops. |
| 1:25.0 | Now, before you get too worked up about the metabolism thing, |
| 1:29.0 | there's another reality that actually has a much bigger impact on people who have lost a significant amount of weight. |
| 1:35.0 | A smaller body requires fewer calories. |
| 1:39.0 | That means that if you want to spend the rest of your life in a smaller body than the one you've got right now, |
| 1:44.9 | you will need to spend the rest of your life eating less than you do now. |
| 1:50.0 | Now, don't shoot the messenger. I didn't say you have to spend the rest of your life hungry. |
| 1:55.0 | The other reason that diets almost always fail is that they're temporary solutions |
