Summary

Welcome to The Big Idea of the Week!

On today’s Broken Brain Podcast, our host, Dhru Purohit, talks to us about creating an “avoid list”, and how it can help you achieve your goals and dreams.

We're all familiar with a to-do list. But most of us have never heard about an “avoid list."

The thing to understand about avoiding things or avoidance is that it's just a code word for fear. There's a great quote from Tony Robbins where he says, "Procrastination is just a code word for fear. But people say it because it sounds more romantic or better. No one just wants to flat out say I'm afraid, but that's exactly what they are."

Most people don't even know they are avoiding something. It's often in the background of their mind, and they are trying to make progress on their to-do list in the week, but they keep hitting roadblocks of lack of motivation or lack of excitement. This is where an avoid list can be very powerful!

So how does it work?

Take out a blank piece of paper, and ask yourself this question: “Is there anything in my life right now that I'm avoiding or afraid to give attention to”?

Once you have the answer—ask yourself the following questions:

-What story do I believe about this topic?

-When did I start believing that story?

-What's my ideal intention?

-How do I want to re-write this story?

The quicker we are aware of what we're avoiding or resisting, the quicker we can unravel the story and energy around it. When that happens we are left with the freedom to do anything we want to do.

Everyone, Drupal here, host of the Brooklyn Marine Podcast with another big idea of the week episode.

0:05.4

Big idea of the week episodes are where I bring a thought, a distinction or an idea that's radically

0:10.3

transform my life for the better today. We're talking about an avoid list. More specifically,

0:16.4

the title of today's episode is Do You Need an Avoid List? Well, what is an avoid list?

0:24.4

We're all familiar with the idea of a to-do list. It's a list of things that we want to get done in the

0:28.9

day or in the week. Important things to us. But most of us have never heard of an avoid list.

0:35.2

Well, it's kind of funny because an avoid list sounds like a list of things that you just

0:38.8

want to stay away from, avoid watching the news, avoid doom scrolling on Instagram. And actually,

0:46.4

that could be a good list of things to make. But that's not what we're talking about. What we're

0:52.4

talking about is more accurately described as things I'm avoiding list. An avoid list is a list of

1:02.0

things that you're avoiding making progress on or addressing. Things that you've said are important

1:09.4

for you that you want to put your attention on. Their things on this list are things that are keeping

1:16.4

us from our goals and dreams in life and preventing us from making progress on our actual to-do list.

1:23.6

Now, the thing is, why would we want to create an avoid list? Why would we actually want to spend time

1:29.2

creating it? Well, maybe you've noticed this. I definitely have. Maybe you've noticed the fact

1:35.6

that avoiding things actually takes a lot of work. It uses a lot of energy, even though you're not

1:43.5

necessarily, quote unquote, doing something. Avoiding is actually doing something. There's a major

1:52.0

part of our brain that's used towards the energy of dealing with the resistance. You know, when we're

1:59.2

avoiding something, we're resisting working on something. We're resisting addressing something

2:05.8

and resisting actually takes a lot of energy because there's one part of you that wants to do

2:12.6

something that wants to address something that wants to firsthand dive in and deal with it.

2:19.4

And then there's another part of you. The resistance, the ego, the avoidance, that doesn't want to
