0:00.0 | This is the Baymont podcast with Marty Solman. I'm his co-host Brent Billings. Today we look at the second letter to Thessalonica. Learn about the man of lawlessness and wrestle with the implications of this mysterious character. |
0:19.0 | This is Dede. Letter of second Thessalonians. Maybe even more of a stretch for me to talk about here on this podcast. These two letters are simply just this is going to be you know every session has kind of like it's it's low. |
0:33.0 | It's weak spot. It's that I even had one person write me once and they probably listen to podcasts. It's okay. I love you and they're like that lesson was a throw away like that. No that was garbage like I need you to. |
0:46.0 | It's back in session two with the profits. And it's just like well I just don't have much material on that. I don't have like a whole bunch of things to blow your mind with so this is definitely that spot. So if you're like oh that's a throw away. |
0:59.0 | We can't be experts on everything we can't we just still so much to learn is still so much to learn so we are. |
1:07.0 | But the Bayma podcast is about stretching people and making people grow so the fact that you're even here for this episode Marty is that's right part of our whole deal. That's right absolutely because there's still so much to learn so worked to be done. So these two letters are not my strong suit. I have not studied a bunch yet. I might change that years to come but so far. |
1:27.0 | I can say that the little work I've done has brought to my attention that I am not a fan of second Thessalonians like not at all I find myself wondering about authorship and I don't say that very quickly I am not one and you've been with me long enough to know this to be true Brent I am not one to question the cannon. |
1:45.0 | There are lots of people are like well the apocrym should be in the cannon and and why are these books in the cannon and those not and people really want to get worked up about that stuff I do not like to like not that you're not allowed to ask those questions like ask them I'm just fine with the cannon I have found the books in the cannon are fine with me I hate that we rearranged the old testament that's about the only. |
2:04.0 | I have like a big deal to me second Thessalonians would be like that one exception I don't know if I found any other books not Jude not like there's another books of people wrestle with Martin the rest of James. |
2:19.0 | I don't know how I feel about second Thessalonians I don't know if it's Pauline I don't know if Paul wrote it anyway so I'm not one to question the cannon scholarship is very divided on the authorship of second Thesslean specifically. |
2:36.0 | Absolutely yeah and and scholarships always going to argue about Paul's letters but second Thessalonians especially very very very argued about so I'm not one to question the cannon except the cannon wholeheartedly I don't like to question the stance of early orthodox Christian community but many biblical teachers and early reformers had their questions about different books and mine personally revolve around second Thessalonians I say this mainly because the Greek seems to be distinctly unpolished. |
3:06.0 | I think to me and I know that Paul's letters are probably all written by scribes I get that and I'm no Greek scholar I've mentioned that before I have this disdain for Greek and again well we'll give a shout out to our buddy professor of answer wrestle and he can maybe he if he wants to write me about how to pronounce parusia and if he wants to tell me all the ways that I'm right or wrong about this assessment here I'd love to hear from him he can write me an email if he agrees with me you can be sure that I'm going to share that. |
3:36.0 | I'm sure it with all the listeners if he disagrees with me you can be sure that I'm not going to share anything so there you go. |
3:43.0 | That sounds like a great follow up episode for sometime sometime later yeah absolutely but when I look at the Greek and I'm no expert but what I have looked at seems to be some of the messiest Greek I have ever seen in all the New Testament very uncharacteristic of Paul's letters in my opinion. |
4:05.0 | I'm going to put myself up to be an expert but it seems to spend an unusual amount of time trying to convince the reader of its Pauling authorship and rejection of any other letters they might have received like don't pay attention to any other letters I'm Paul this is absolutely Paul like why the over like the heavy handed over emphasis on that I I |
4:29.0 | please hear me I am not telling you to throw second the slow nians out of your Bible please don't rip it out it's not all my point. |
4:37.0 | I'm just being honest about some of the things that I've wrestled with personally I'm fine it's still in my Bible I'm still going to read it. |
4:44.0 | And we're still going to do this podcast as if it's a part of the Holy inspired and fallible cannon and just inviting us to think critically that's all so it's great second the slow nians part of my New Testament that is awesome. |
4:58.0 | These topics are far above my pay grade so far above my pay grade so I will continue as I always have and I foresee myself doing in the future accepting the second letter to the church of Thessalonica as a part of authoritative God breathed scripture. |
5:17.0 | This short little discussion something me along when today Brent I'm trying to go slow and waste a much of time so we can get like 15 minutes podcast. |
5:26.0 | Oh I can come over questions if you need to fill time I don't know if I want you to do about second Thessalonians. |
5:31.0 | Oh man this short little discussion today is going to revolve around what I see as one of the dominant pictures in the book of second Thessalonians and that is this picture of the man of lawlessness. |
