Noticing: Intimate Encounters With the Natural World

The internationally bestselling author of Last Child in the Woods seeks a deeper personal connection to nature during this time of ecoanxiety and upheaval by exploring his own backyard.

Long beloved for his insightful, inspiring nature writing, Richard Louv returns with his most personal book yet. Noticing is about discovering who you are by exploring the natural world. Louv shows how, by tapping into the thirty or more human senses we have, readers can develop skills––sensory, scientific, artistic, and spiritual––to see and experience the otherworlds of nature.

Through personal essays, rich with descriptions of the California wilderness around his home in the most biodiverse county in the nation, Louv draws on wisdom from influences as far-reaching as neuroscience, nature photography, Indigenous traditions, and mindfulness to foster what he calls "bioenchantment." He offers a new, deeper understanding of what it means to see a tree, know a fox, and to become fully human.

Richard Louv is a journalist and the author of ten books, including Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder, The Nature Principle, and Vitamin N. Translated into twenty languages, his books have helped launch an international movement to connect children, families, and communities to nature. He is cofounder and chair emeritus of the nonprofit Children & Nature Network, which supports a new nature movement. Louv has written for the New York Times, Outside magazine, Orion Magazine, Parents, and many other publications. He appears regularly on national radio and TV, and lectures throughout the world. In 2008, he was awarded the Audubon Medal. Prior recipients have included Rachel Carson, E. O. Wilson, President Jimmy Carter, and Sir David Attenborough.

a.m. East today. Joining me on today's show, a legend for me, one of my favorite authors, a journalist

0:50.3

and author now of 11 books, including the New York Times bestseller, Last Child in

the Woods, which changed my life and the life of my family, especially my two amazing daughters.

1:01.4

He's the co-founder of the Child Nature Network. He is, my friend, he is Richard Louvre. He has a new

1:07.7

book. It's called Noticing Intimate Encounters with the Natural World,

1:11.8

and you should go buy it. And the rest of his books, if you want to skip to my interview with

1:16.3

Rich Louvre right now, it begins at about 28 minutes in. But like every day, I've got your

1:22.2

headlines. I've got your clip show. Let's get to it. Let's start with the fact that the

1:26.9

House of Representatives voted to end

1:29.2

the Iran war, is the short version. A little longer. Four House Republicans sided with Democrats

1:34.9

yesterday to direct General Fatton to halt U.S. engagement in Iran and require permission from

1:40.9

Congress to continue operations in the Middle East. The vote, New York Times writes, was a remarkable rebuke of Trump and his handling of the war.

1:48.5

The adopted resolution, which now heads to the Senate, was the latest sign of divisions between the White House and Republicans on Capitol Hill.

1:55.6

In a vote last month to move forward with a similar measure, a handful of GOP senators also broke ranks.

2:01.1

But if the measure were to pass the upper chamber, the ability of Congress to force a president to withdraw troops remains a contested legal question.

2:08.8

So I don't think that's going to make a big difference in the actual war funding or ongoing as it stands.

2:18.9

Maybe I'm wrong, but getting that vote on the record is pretty important.

2:23.7

And we can then interpret the contested legal question.

2:27.5

And also in the Middle East, Iran fired a barrage of missiles and drones at Kuwait,

2:31.8

killing a civilian, injuring dozens of others at the country's only international airport.
