Summary

With Matthieu Pageau we discuss symbolism in the creation story told in Genesis and how it relates to consciousness, the problem of self-reference and how true symbolism usually appears in a fractal structure of microcosms and macrocosm. The problem of science and rationality is that by emphasizing materiality and reason it often struggles with the paradox of self-reference and self-causality, just as it struggles with the problem of the justification for hierarchical structures of value. These two issues are related through the fact of consciousness and self-awareness. Though science struggles to include the consciousness of the viewer in its general calculation, this is something that is done very well in traditional cosmologies through a series of self-replicating patterns which are embedded into each other somewhat like a fractal pattern. 1:04.0	So, Mathieu and I, we are starting our second conversation for our YouTube channel,
1:10.0	and we thought that this time we could
1:11.6	talk about the problem of self-reference and also the idea of how symbolism works as a series of
1:21.7	embedded patterns one in each other like a kind of fractal structure where the larger structure repeats itself
1:28.5	in the smaller structure.
1:29.7	And how those two questions, the question of self-referentiality and the question of patterns
1:35.6	embedding themselves as replicating themselves in embedded structures, how they're related.
1:40.6	And to be honest, we're a bit nervous to talk about this because
1:44.8	the call question of self-reference and the question of things that refer to themselves is is the
1:52.6	kind of subject which just when you try to talk about it and when you even when you try to think
1:57.9	about it turns your brain into a kind of mush where all of a sudden you can't see clearly because of the problem of something trying to look at itself.
