Hey there. I hope you are enjoying your fall so far. As I'm recording this, it's mid-October and I woke up to a 39.9 degree morning,

0:12.4

which I guess is about average for this time of year, but we definitely don't see frost until usually the end of October or the beginning of November. But it definitely got me

0:23.0

thinking about my crops outside. And no matter how many years I try to extend the season by

0:29.5

planting a fall garden and even planting crops that I know will survive the winter, I still have

0:35.4

the same question nagging at me. How low can they go? How low the temperature

0:42.3

will some of these fall and winter crops withstand? And do I need to consider covering them in some way?

0:50.0

When I started doing research on this to prepare to be able to extend my fall crop season

0:55.3

and even extend my season into the winter in an early spring, I have to tell you I grew more

1:00.9

and more confused. I figured I'm just going to have to try some of this and see what works and see

1:05.9

what doesn't and observe it in my garden because I just can't seem to get any easy answers and from

1:12.3

questions that I've received Instagram DMs I'm realizing that I'm not alone so in

1:18.2

today's episode we're going to be talking about basic season extension and overwintering

1:24.0

crops we'll talk about what the difference between the two are and what we can do to

1:29.8

help prolong the crops that we already have in the garden. If you've found yourself wondering how

1:36.3

long your fall crops will last in the garden before succumbing to the winter, or if you've just

1:41.8

been really confused about the different types of floating row

1:44.6

covers out there. I'm going to try to demystify some of those things to give you a basic

1:49.1

understanding to be able to help you when it comes to testing different crops and their

1:53.9

tolerances in your garden. And if you're looking at covering some of your crops, we'll talk

1:59.5

about the different covering

2:00.8

methods that you can use, the most basic kinds. That way you have a bit of an idea what to do

2:06.6

before you start buying those floating row covers and putting them on your fall in winter crops.
