I want to talk about the other end of the equation. I want to talk about the hearing of sermons.

And I'm not exactly sure why this topic came to my mind, but I want to talk to you

about what has been like for me to be on the hearing end of sermons that God has used in my life.

Maybe the practical implications of what we'll discuss are threefold. Number one,

the power of hearing. This is a reminder that preaching is an oral medium. I'm, of course,

an advocate of writing full sermon manuscripts.

That's what I do for 99% of the sermons that I preach.

I think writing out word for word sermon manuscripts is a key factor to pulpit effectiveness.

But you must make sure to write for the ear, not the eye. Preaching is not a written

medium. It's an oral medium and there is power in the hearing. And even as preachers, we need to be under preaching. We need to be under good

preaching. And we need to listen to preaching in two ways as sinners and as students. I think you'll

see a bit of both in the list that I'll give.

You listen to a sermon as a preacher.

First, as a sinner, that is, as everyone else in the congregation, a sinner who needs to know the mind of God, the will of God, the truth of God.
