not because of how angry it was at Margaret Thatcher, but because everyone was simply mad for drugs,

psychedelic ones, like ecstasy and LSD.

They were also mad for a groundbreaking fusion of dance beats and indie rock

that only trickled onto the American pop charts when it was adopted by artists who mostly didn't create it.
