Summary

Should you quit that thing, or are you giving up too soon? Jen shares how she made the big decision to quit her job, and the process we can all use to make sure that we don't make these kinds of choices out of fear or self-sabotage.

Up first, she shares powerful ideas from Run DMC and Beastie Boys' producer Rick Rubin on how to stay sane while doing creative work. It has to do with having a "mosaic mentality."

This week we are talking about when to quit.

0:22.0

This is kind of a follow-up episode, it's a bit of a follow-up to the episode that we

0:26.5

did. Episode number, I'm speaking slowly, so I forgot to prep this. Episode 138 found it.

0:37.7

That was published on January 11th called Don't Quit. That was a very hot topic among

0:43.3

you guys, you thought it was very interesting. And I wanted to follow up on that and build

0:49.0

on that topic because if anything, I am known for telling people to quit. If you have a day

0:55.2

job you don't like and you come to me and you say, hey, Jen, Jen, I have a dream. I have a blue

1:02.4

flame that I would love to follow. The only thing that's holding me back is that I currently have a

1:10.0

day job that pays me $50,000 a year and absolutely no savings and my account is overdrawn and I'm a

1:18.4

single mother of 12 kids and nine of them have special needs. And so sometimes I wonder if it would

1:24.7

be prudent to quit this job and follow my dream of making baskets out of yarn. I don't know,

1:33.3

Jen, what do you think? I'm always the one who is going to say you should quit. I believe in your

1:39.4

dream. I believe in your dream and I think you should quit right now. I will tell you that I am a

1:45.3

good luck token. Well, I recently did this with someone who she was single and she's not in that

1:50.9

situation, but she did have a great day job, the kind of job in high tech that anyone would love to

1:56.7

have. And she said, gosh, Jen, I don't know. Should I quit to follow my dream of doing comedy? And I

2:01.8

said, yes, quit. Do it. Caitlin, six days later, she got an offer to write on SNL. She is now a

2:10.9

writer for SNL. So when I tell people to quit their job, it's good luck. If I tell you to quit,

2:16.8

then it's going to work out for you. Yeah, yeah, Caitlin. Okay, I'm going to wait. We're going to wait

2:20.6

for a big moment for Caitlin and I'll tell her and then it will for sure work out. So it's weird

2:26.3

that I did an episode called Don't Quit since I'm kind of the the quit person. So I'm going to build

2:31.5

on that and say, okay, sometimes it is time to quit. If you are in a dead end job, if you or
