Hello and welcome to the Grenfell Tower Inquiry podcast with me, Kate Lamble.

This week, the Inquiry heard opening statements for a whole new module.

It's going to focus on the management of Grenfell Tower by the tenant management organisation

and the local council, the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea,

or RBKC, as it's known.

Whether and to what extent RBKC and the TMO and others performed the duties they each owed in respect of fire safety.

These duties included fire risk assessments carried out on the tower,

work on internal fire safety measures such as front doors and lifts

and the handling of residents' complaints.

As always, the opening statements gave us a glimpse into some of the issues

we'll be hearing about over the next few months.

This week, lawyers for the

bereaved survivors and residents claimed resident involvement in the refurbishment of Grenfell

Tower was tokenistic, and the events before and during the fire were a landmark act

of discrimination against disabled and vulnerable people. Also, the person who carried out

the fire risk assessment on the tower

was accused of inventing some of his professional qualifications. This was Stephanie Barwise,

one of the lawyers who represented a group of bereaved survivors and residents.

Module 3 is a tale of lessons unlearned, despite the teaching of successive fires. The failure of the

physical and managerial controls at Grenfell, which should have mitigated the extent of fire,

was as predictable as it was preventable. And Stad represented the Mayor of London. She said the
