I suppose January 6th is now one of those dates, but I think of the challenger disaster.

But for me, the one that makes me choke in grief and emotion every November 22nd, in other

words, the severest for me of all those commemorative dates is the assassination of John

Kennedy.

I was too young really to know what was going on.

But I could sense in the response of my parents just how monumental a moment that was.

And I think, as a historian, reading books about the aftermath, Vietnam, Nixon, Watergate,

the revelations of the CIA, the scandal, the Iran Contra scandal, et cetera, et cetera.
