Summary

What do you get when you swap the office for a classroom and our hosts for school pupils? An incredibly special episode, we hope you’ll agree.

Yes, that’s right – this week’s conversation is brought to you from Totnes Progressive School, where the children were joined by an extraordinary guest: Dr Jane Goodall DBE, Founder of the Jane Goodall Institute and United Nations Messenger of Peace.

With the support of Outrage + Optimism’s Tom Rivett-Carnac and his sister Bee, who together wrote and illustrated a children’s book voiced by Dr Goodall, the pupils take it in turns to ask about their guest’s experiences, work, and thoughts on the future.

From Dr Goodall’s memories of her own childhood to reflections on what children now can do to help in healing our planet, this is a moving lens on a remarkable life spanning nearly nine decades. Dr Goodall shares lessons from her mother about working hard and not giving up on dreams, as well as how together we can – and will – change the world.

We hope you find this conversation as inspirational as we do.

Christiana + Tom’s book ‘The Future We Choose’ is available now!

Okay, we have some special guest co-hosts for you today for a special conversation about what happened when we all stopped with Dr. Jane Goodall. Thanks for being here.

Hi everyone. It's Tom here so I am very excited today to bring you a special episode of the podcast and I'm just going to give you a few words

1:10.2

here to explain what it is and the context, but we have Jane Goodall joining us, which is very exciting. So a couple of years ago I sat down and did

1:19.9

something I very rarely do, which is I wrote a poem. And it was about the moment

1:23.8

that we were in lockdown and my hopes for the future and how we could use this

1:27.2

moment to transform where we were on our overall trajectory. This poem that

1:32.6

was a sort of exercise of an evening was picked up by my sister, who is the most

1:37.2

brilliant illustrator, her name's B, and she turned it into a children's book

1:41.0

that we just made available for free online. This was then discovered by our

1:45.0

friends at Ted Ed, who then turned it into an animation, which they put on the

1:50.2

Ted Ed channel and had hundreds of thousands of views and was narrated by

1:54.3

none other than Jane Goodall. So this was all very exciting. And the final piece of

1:58.2

the story is now about a month ago, the book was actually picked up and properly

2:03.0

published by Cottage Door Press. So you can get it anywhere you get books. So if

2:08.2

you like it and you have kids or kids in your life that you want to buy it,

2:13.1

great if you purchase the book and a proportion of the proceeds go to the Jane Goodall

2:18.0

Institute. Now in recognition of this moment of publication, that's obviously very

2:22.5

exciting for me and B, we've produced this special episode of Outrage and Optimism.
