Summary

Some athletes think about "strength" in terms of push-ups and pull-ups, others think about bodybuilders and weightlifting. Strength training for multisport development is NOT strictly weightlifting.

Matt talks with long-time Purple Patch Coach, Mike Olzinski, about the role of strength training in endurance sports and life performance.

According to Olzinski, a comprehensive strength training program consists of FIVE Basic Biomotor Building Blocks:

  • Mobility + Stability

  • Balance + Coordination

  • Strength → Endurance = Ability to do work

  • Power → Power Endurance = Ability to do work over time.

  • Speed → Speed Endurance (aka getting faster in a RACE) = Ability to do work over time while in motion

Matt and Mike discuss each of these elements in detail, along with common mistakes endurance athletes make in the process, how to incorporate a routine into a busy schedule, hormonal benefits, and why you shouldn't worry about gaining too much bulk.

Strength training is a Purple Patch Pillar of Performance that requires time, pateinece, and consistency, but, as you'll hear, the benefits extend FAR beyond simply 'getting strong.'

Remember, it’s no different than any other concept in life, health, and performance. It is a life-long project. Starting is always better than not starting, but if there was ever a PERFECT time to start, it would be in the post-season or early in the year. Do yourself a favor and just get to the point where it starts to truly feel good. Success will only bread more success.
