Before we start this podcast, I want to say up front that this episode is about you,

not about other people. It's a conversation that I hope will get you thinking about how you want

to show up in the world when politics are discussed. This episode is not about how you want other people

in your life to talk about politics, because you can't control other people, and you don't know

their experiences or the depth of the pain that they may carry surrounding certain candidates

and topics. I recently learned the term tone policing, which means refusing to listen to somebody

simply because you don't like their tone. Tone policing is often used as a way to silence and shame

someone who is angry and hurting and wants to see change in the world. It's essentially saying,

I won't listen to you unless you make me feel comfortable with the way that you deliver your message.

I guess I want to say please don't use this episode to tone police the people in your life who

are passionate about politics. Instead, use the suggestions in this episode to look at how you are

engaging in those conversations and whether or not it's productive and aligned with your values.

I do think that the way we respond to other people might change the tone of the conversation,
