Summary

Chicago’s crackdown on Airbnb, HomeAway, and other online home-sharing platforms has sparked a lawsuit. In June, the city council passed a law that heavily restricts property rights and places significant burdens on homeowners. Is this regulation needed to protect consumers and preserve affordable housing? Or is this another giveaway to the hotel industry, seeking to insulate itself from competition? What does it mean for Chicago consumers? Evan is joined by Christina Sandefur, Executive Vice President of the Goldwater Institute, which has filed a legal challenge to the Chicago law.

allowing overnight guests to stay there. Sometimes people do that for pay. Sometimes they do it

1:22.6

in exchange for meals or chores. But at the end of the day, it's just people allowing someone

to stay in their private home.

1:30.8

All that's happened today is that the internet

1:32.8

has enabled homeowners and travelers to connect

1:35.7

in ways that have never really happened before.

1:38.7

In essence, they've made the practice more efficient.

1:41.7

And of course, as we see, when a practice becomes more

1:44.7

efficient, then regulators seem to be in the mindset that they have to do something to crack down

1:50.5

on it. And that is exactly what happened in Chicago. Chicago just recently this past summer
