Summary

Luna Corbden is the author of "Recovering Agency - Lifting the Veil of Mormon Mind Control." In this multi-part Mormon Stories Podcast series, Lindsey employs the tools of social psychology to identify ways in which the Mormon church uses various coercive techniques often associated with high demand religions (also referred to as cults). Throughout the series we will be asking, "In what ways does the Mormon church behave in ways similar to other high demand religions (or cults), and what can it do to become less cult-like?"

The primary goal of this series is to help people raised within the Mormon Church unpack and separate their own identity from church doctrine and policies. In their book. Luna explores 31 different mind control techniques used by high demand religions generally, and by the Mormon church specifically.

In Part 3, we will cover the 3rd set of methods (of the 31 in total): Mystical Manipulation, Milieu Control, Loading the Language, Totalist Reframing, Thought-Terminating Cliches, and Time Control.

Luna Corbden (who also writes as Luna Lindsey) was born into the LDS Church and left the faith in 2001, at age 26. They now live in Washington state and write about topics of interest to them, including psychology, mind control, culture, and autism. They also write science fiction and fantasy novels, and write short stories for speculative fiction publications like the Journal of Unlikely Entomology, Crossed Genres, and the Recognize Fascism anthology. When they're not busy traveling to improbable worlds, they're thinking hard about this improbable world.

0:27.4	Luna Lindsey Corbidon or Luna Corbidon. And we are diving deep into the concepts in Luna's book,

0:48.3	to quickly summarize what Luna has done with so much brilliance and insight and wisdom is

1:02.2	demand organizations or authorities or religions. It's much bigger than religions. It's political
1:09.0	parties, conservative and liberal. It's businesses, it's corporations, it's government, it's family
1:14.6	systems, it's personal relationships. Wherever there are people or groups wielding undue influence
1:22.4	or authority, these techniques and tactics have been studied by many others. But what Luna has
1:28.6	done so brilliantly is distill these techniques into 31 flavors of, I'll say coercion or undo
1:35.6	influence. Luna, you'll have to remind me what they're 31 flavors of. But 31 tools or techniques
1:41.4	that are employed by organizations that wield undo influence and then systematically apply it
1:48.3	to Mormonism. But you could just as much apply it to the Democrat party or the Republican party
1:52.9	or corporations or governments or abusive partners. You could apply it to anyone. And it's just
1:58.8	been groundbreaking so far. We're covering about six topics per episode because we're on part three.
2:05.4	That means we've covered 12 or 13 topics so far. This is part three of at least a five part series.
