Gulnaz Khan is a journalist reporting at the intersection of science and spirituality. She's the
climate editor at TED and a former editor at
National Geographic.

Gulnaz is the creator and executive producer of Sacred Planet (2025), a
documentary series exploring how climate change is reshaping sacred spaces and
traditions around the world. Both an elegy for what's vanishing and a call to
protect what remains, it's rooted in the belief that our connection to the earth is
intrinsic to who we are—and to how we survive.

The series builds on her research as a 2022–23 Ted Scripps Fellow in
Environmental Journalism at the University of Colorado Boulder, where she
studied how faith-based communities are responding to unprecedented
ecological breakdown.

She holds a Master of Science from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of
Public Health and a Certificate in Climate Change and Health from Yale
University.

Hello and welcome to today's episode of Stand Up where my guest is a fascinating young journalist who is producer as well of an awesome new PBS series called Sacred Planet.

0:15.0

Gulnaz Khan joins me for the first time to talk about this four-part series, which I wanted to do something a little

0:22.0

different and talk with someone about a climate-related issue here. It is, after all, climate

0:27.1

week. We've been lost in all of the other news issues over the past few weeks, of course,

0:32.3

all of which are really relevant and important, and I like to cover them. But today, talking

0:36.8

with a guest about something a little different, and I think you cover them, but today talking with a guest about something

0:38.4

a little different, and I think you're really going to like it. A conversation with Goulon's

0:42.6

con starts at about 36 minutes. But first, I've got your headlines and a clip show, all the best

0:49.1

sound bites I could find from the last 24 hours coming up. Nobody does it better, huh? I don't know. I'm sure there's a lot

0:56.0

of people who do it better, but I think this is pretty good what I'm doing and producing it myself

1:01.2

each and every day, kind of quality and quantity, one might argue, is hard to come by. And what,

1:08.7

if you did, ad free?

1:14.9

There's no annoying ads at the beginning, in the middle and at the end or wherever the hell else that they show up.

1:16.9

Nope.

1:17.5

It's just me and you.

1:18.9

I'm not actually trying to make billions of dollars.

1:22.3

I don't know.

1:23.0

I'm trying to do purposeful work, things that I care about, that I know that you care about,

1:27.9

and more than anything else, build a community of thoughtful, kind, caring, generous, hilarious

1:33.8

people.

1:34.6

A lot of very funny people in our world.

1:36.8

And I'll be hosting a hangout tonight to prove it.
