I'm David Scales. This is the Surf Splinder podcast. Welcome back. If you're somewhat new to the show, we do weekly episodes, alternating formats, two episodes of surf news a month, and then two profile pieces.

With these profile pieces, we keep coming back to surfboard shapers.

That wasn't really part of my design for the show initially.

Yes, I planned to interview surfboard shapers. My second episode ever

was actually with Eric Arakawa, but I planned to rotate the shaper interviews with pro

surfers, photographers, filmmakers, publishers, etc., which we obviously have done, but I always

find myself more interested in surfboard

shapers.

And I'm curious if you, the listener, actually feels this same interest or maybe the same

compulsion that I have.

Perhaps it's just that surfboards are the center of our surf experience, and that's why

these people are fascinating to me.

You know that I'm actually writing two new surfboards that I've been talking about a lot on this show.

A shortboard and a nose rider that I got from Roger Hines.

So there's more about that conversation to come next week with Roger Hines.

But I think that these Shaper series episodes appeal to me on a couple of different levels.

Shapers are craftsmen.

They are artists who work within a medium that is ultimately dictated or even constrained by

physics.

It's not just a creative pursuit.

It's constrained by hydrodynamic principles.

So the work requires this really unique blend of both sides of the brain, a unique art and science duality.
