Summary

Jill Wine-Banks hosts #SistersInLaw to analyze the indictment of Trump by Fani Willis in Georgia, the extent of RICO charges that he and his co-conspirators face, and what happens if threats to the judge and grand jurors continue. Then, they lay out the legal attempts by conservatives to restrict and ban mifepristone and how their challenges will likely be resolved. From there, they discuss how the 1st Amendment protects journalists after the police raid on the offices of the Marion County Record, and the balance between national security and our rights.

store, and me, Jill Wine Banks. Today we have three great topics, Georgia of course is on our minds after the fourth indictment of the former president.

0:45.2

Miffa Prestone's been decided again this time by the fifth circuit in a not surprising outcome that we're hoping may change at some point, and then there's a shocking case that didn't get much attention in Kansas, where a newspaper office was rated and all their devices were taken. You'll love hearing about that.

Today before we get to the really good topics, I want to ask you a question, I'm going to dinner at a friend's house, and all we ever talk about is politics and the news, of course, is usually pretty depressing and scary in terms of

1:35.2

what's going to happen to our democracy. So I want to ask all of you for suggestions on what can you talk about when you don't want to talk about politics. Kim, let's start with you.

1:46.2

Well, it's really hard in my household considering that my husband and I are both journalists and I cover the law and politics and he covers the Supreme Court. So there's usually a very strong tendency for us to bring our work to the table.

2:02.2

But you know what has solved that adopting a puppy. We talk a lot about snickers, what she's up to, what we need to train out of her, how, you know, whether it's how much she loves everyone and how wonderful that is.

2:18.2

Or how the only person on earth she hates is the mailman and she has scratched up our door as a result, because every time the mailman comes out, she loses her mind.

2:29.2

So that takes up a lot of our dinner time conversation, Jill.

2:34.2

That's a great substitute for sure and choice. What animals do you talk about? What is it that's not legal, not legal, not political.

2:44.2

So interestingly, my husband, who until recently was a state court judge in Alabama and is still a lawyer in private practice, or at least I hope so he's spending a little bit too much time on the couch for my taste these days.

2:57.2

But I'm sorry, honey, but you know, Bob does not like to talk politics at our dinner table or when we're out with friends.

3:07.2

And I have found that to be a good rule, although people really want to, you know, ask questions about politics and particularly about Trump when we go out, I try to keep it to a minimum.

3:18.2

I had this great dinner last night with two of my closest friends, people who I started out with in the US attorney's offices, prosecutors with, and the three of us hadn't been together alone for a long time.

3:31.2

And I found myself part way into the conversation thinking this is so wonderful. One of them is in the middle of writing a book and we were talking about that and the motivation and the setting.

3:43.2

And one of the others lives out of state now. So we were talking about what she's doing and what her kids are up to.

3:50.2

And I had this moment of clarity that I don't know if I can reflect where I thought this is why we do the work we do this is why the pro democracy work matters so much so that we can have wonderful lives with people that we love about.

4:03.2

And hear about what's going on in their lives. It just it filled me with a lot of happiness last night.
