David Cay Johnston books are as important to my understanding on American Tax Policy, economics and how our system is rigged by rich elites for rich elites as anything else I have read
David Cay Johnston is a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter and best-selling author.
The Washington Monthly called him as “one of America’s most important journalists.” The Portland Oregonian said his work equals the original muckrakers: Ida Tarbell, Upton Sinclair and Lincoln Steffens.
Johnston met Donald Trump in 1988 and in April 1990 revealed that Trump’s was no billionaire. When Trump announced his latest run for the White House in June 2015, Johnston was the only nationally-known journalist who immediately said Trump was serious this time and might get the GOP nomination. His reporting over the next year led to the Making of Donald Trump, published around the world in English and German on August 2, 2016, by Melville House.
The San Jose Mercury recruited Johnston when he was just 18 years old because of his reporting for two small weekly newspapers in Santa Cruz, Calif. At age 19 The Mercury hired him as a staff writer. Within weeks his byline made the front page.
Over the next four decades his award-winning investigations appeared in that paper, the Detroit Free Press, Los Angeles Times, The Philadelphia Inquirer and The New York Times.
Since 2009 Johnston has taught the business regulation, property and tax law of the ancient world at Syracuse University College of Law. He previously taught writing, reporting and magazine writing at the University of Southern California and UCLA Extension. He has lectured on four continents about journalistic techniques, ethics, legal theory and tax policy.

| 0:00.0 | Hello, my friends. It is Thursday. I am happy to have you here. I'll be hosting a hangout tonight at 8 p.m. East for all paid subscribers. And check me out at 10 and 11.30 a.m. where I will be live with two very special guests. First, Sky Perryman of a great organization called |
| 0:22.9 | Democracy Forward will join me to talk about the very important work that organization is doing |
| 0:28.8 | to file lawsuits, and they've won many times to save our democracy. Really looking forward |
| 0:34.1 | to that. At 1130 a.m., I'm scheduled to talk to the great Joy Reid. |
| 0:38.8 | The legend Joy Reid will join me to talk about all kinds of things. |
| 0:42.8 | So check me out live for both of those today. |
| 0:45.8 | My guest today is David K. Johnston. |
| 0:48.8 | And I'm very excited because while he was joining me live yesterday, |
| 0:53.7 | a listener who was watching live, |
| 0:56.5 | suggested he join us for Farm Jam, because it's only about an hour away where he works and lives at Rochester, |
| 1:02.5 | and looks like he's going to join us. |
| 1:04.4 | David K. Johnston, live in person. I'll interview him. We'll do a little Q&A. He'll join us for dinner. |
| 1:09.6 | He and his wife, it looks like, on Saturday. So I hope you can make it to Slate Hill Edible Forest for Farm Jam. And if you want more information, you can get that in everyday's show notes. You've got to be a paid subscriber. But that will be very cool if we get that special guest, David K. Johnston, to join us on Saturday night. He joins me here on the show |
| 1:29.0 | after the news and clip show starts. Our conversation starts at about 33 minutes in if you want to |
| 1:35.6 | jump ahead, but I'm going to get started on the news in just a second. I do want to read an email |
| 1:40.6 | from Lillian who sent me a very thoughtful criticism and I want to share it. She said, hey, Peter, truly enjoy your daily show. Appreciate all the hard work. You do single-handedly to put into it. I've been a listener since your serious days and followed you after you're left. Here's the butt. The often inconsistent volume levels are annoying and sometimes so frustrated and I have to turn the show off. |
| 2:01.4 | For context, I listen on an Alexa speaker. Perhaps that has something to do with this, but what I |
| 2:06.0 | experience is at my volume to your opening monologue. Then the level varies with each clip you play |
| 2:11.0 | in each interview. Some are so low. I can barely hear them if I turn the volume up. What next comes |
| 2:15.7 | blasting out of the speaker is up and down is so frustrating that sometimes I have to give up. I realize you're managing the production by yourself and how you pull it all together. There's nothing short of miraculous. But if there's anything you can do to level up the volume, this one listener will be very appreciative. Lillian, thank you very much for your thoughtful, kind, and helpful email. You're not alone. I'm going to try that. Definitely figure that out. I've heard it before, and I'm going to try to figure out how to fix that ASAP. Unfortunately, I'm going to have to end your subscription, and I hope you can find another podcast that doesn't annoy you quite as much that has just as much, as many clips from all types of varying sources with varying volume. |
| 2:56.5 | That shouldn't be that hard. |
| 2:57.4 | I'm killing. |
