Summary

Motion: Pay College Athletes College sports is a big-money business, with football and basketball programs generating millions of dollars in revenue every year. While coaches and athletic directors in Division I programs routinely score seven-figure contracts, student-athletes are currently prohibited from sharing in the profits. Is it time to rewrite the rules in college sports and allow athletes their fair share of the profits? 0:00.0	So very often to be called an amateur is really kind of an insult, except in the one place
0:08.5	where the term is held to be sacred and that is in college sports.
0:13.5	The idea that while they are still students, the men and women who participate in athletics
0:18.2	should only be playing for the love of the game.
0:21.1	Classroom comes first, the playing field second, and money stays out of it.
0:26.7	The fact that we all know that there is money all over college sports, coaches are paid
0:30.5	in the millions, there are billions in TV contracts.
0:33.9	But who does not get paid a salary in all of this, the players themselves?
0:38.0	And why not?
0:39.0	Well goes the argument they're on scholarship and to pay them to give them salaries would
0:43.7	ruin the game.
0:45.2	But the other side says, well, there are workers anyway, there are workers who are earning
0:48.6	billions for their universities.
0:50.4	It's only fair that they should get paid.
0:52.7	It's a thorny argument that's gone on for a long time, but it's flaring up again now,
0:56.7	especially in the wake of corruption scandals.
0:59.3	And in this we think are the makings of a debate.
